Background about Hu木an

A multi-year artistic exchange programme where Singaporean artists received mentorship from Sensorium Theatre and developed capabilities in making works for neurodiverse communities.

This project began in 2019, when the National Museum of Singapore and The Artground invited Sensorium Theatre to share their sensory methodology with Singaporean artists. This collaboration resulted in Hu木an, a sensory-friendly adventure in an interactive rainforest. It started with 20 Singapore based artmakers and educators for the weeklong masterclass, and out of which, 10 were selected to continue to co-created Hutan with Sensorium Theatre  in 2019 and 2020. It premiered 3 years later in 2022 Awesome Arts Festival in Perth with performers from Australia and Singapore, and continued a 2-year run in the National Museum (Singapore), performed by the Singaporean team.  It will be presented at OzAsia 2025 festival in Adelaide.

In Nov 2025, the teams from Singapore and Perth reunited to bring Hu木an to OzAsia 2025. We presented 6 shows at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens where highlights from the William Farquhar Collection were being exhibited.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to carry on this journey with a tripartite collaboration with Papermoon Puppet Theatre and Indonesian artists to strengthen our collective capacity to make the arts more inclusive young people across the region.

Our mission was to create a multi-sensory, interactive experience suitable for children with limited access to the arts, with or without complex disabilities, to bring the collection to life in a way that was accessible for all. The creative process has been highly collaborative and we are delighted with the (tropical) fruits of our collective labour, and hope you will be too. At the heart of this work is a desire for inclusion, and a celebration of diversity.

Sensorium and The Artground is keen to continue this model of a capability development programme, led by a team of two Sensorium and two Singaporean artists, to go into communities in South-East Asia. The team is keen to share our collaborative practices as well as level up these communities' capabilities to develop programmes relevant to their own cultural context, much like how the Singaporean team was able to.

Hu木an - The Performance

Feel the textured leaves with your toes and fingertips, smell the exotic flowers, play hide-and-seek with Hornbill, spot Owl in the moonlit canopy, and help Kingfisher look after her eggs. In the magical Hutan, even a passing rain shower brings a surprise visit from the cheeky Gibbons with a mayhem-filled picnic of yummy tropical fruits for all their new friends. Inspired by the National Museum of Singapore’s William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings, the immersive tactile set, beautiful live music and friendly performers makes this a delightful inclusive experience for children with access needs and their friends.

Note from Sensorium Theatre
We have been collaborating with The Artground, and Singaporean artists since 2018, to share our multi sensory theatre making methodology and build capacity in Singapore to make meaningful theatre experiences for children living with disability. Our mission was to create a multi-sensory, interactive experience suitable for children with complex disabilities and autism diagnosis to bring the collection to life in a way that was accessible for them. It has been such a privilege to work with exceptional Singaporean Artists, and learn more about Singapore and its rich history and culture. We wish to thank The Artground, Singapore, and Performing Lines WA for their roles as catalyst and caretakers of this epic project, and the National Museum of Singapore, and the Singaporean and Australian Governments for their trust and financial support.

“The performance was good and really accommodates to the students’ sensory needs. It brings the world to the students and give them a chance to experience an environment and theatre.”  – SPED school teacher, Singapore

“My boys loved their first show, and it’s truly an inclusive one. Loved how the artists worked around the children and their behaviours, keeping everyone - adults included - so engaged. Can’t wait for more families to catch Hutan” – Parent, Singapore

“The students were able to navigate the narrative from many entry points. Either immersive or involved with the performers. The way the performers interacted so calmly and inclusively was admirable to ensure that our students had the best time possible. The intricate set, the wonderful storyline and immersive plot throughout held our students as a captive audience. The individual and group interactions that the performers had with the students was lovely and engaging as they played with the musical instruments, parts of the set or props ensured continued engagement and interactions. The sensory elements woven throughout the narrative ensured that our younger or higher needs learners were catered for in the most wonderful way. We are so appreciative for the opportunity and hope there will be more experiences like this for our students and other special schools in the future. Thank you OzAsia and centrED.” – SPED school teacher, Adelaide
